Turnout Gear Washing

Turnout gear has to be thoroughly washed before any repairs can be carried out. Turnout Gear Washing uses a special wet wass system together with the Check6 aerospace cleaning agent. This wet wash system will not compromise the integrity of the turnout gear or void manufacturer warranties. We use an industrial-size washer/extractor which is a state of the art piece of machinery. The extractor has an electrically operated valve system, a fresh-water-flushing chemical manifold, and a six liquid chemical injection point to ensure the best, quality controlled wash.

The Turnout Gear Washing system can clean any contaminant or dirt from turnout gear, but if we can’t clean it, you don’t pay. Never discard any turnout gear until you have called us for a quote as we may be able to save the gear for you. Repair and cleaning by Turnout Gear Washing is a far better option than the expensive replacement of gear.

The 2008 version of the NFPA 1851 guidelines are adhered to for the following turnout gear:

• Turnout Coats & Pants
• Wildland Brush Gear
• Vests
• Aluminized Coats & Pants
• Station wear shirts
• Station wear pants
• Gloves
• Military One Piece Ensembles (FFE)
• Boots (Rubber & Leather)
• Hoods
• Coveralls
• Helmets

Turnout Gear Repair

Turnout Gear Washing is also able to take care of any damage to turnout gear garments in conjunction with NFPA guidelines. Rips, tears and burn holes occur naturally with the heavy use of turnout gear. We employ staff that is trained to wash, inspect and repair and use Kevlar and Nomex  for patching, stitching and repairing of turnout gear. These materials are flame retardant and recognized by NFPA. Use of Kevlar and Nomex in repairs extends the life-span of your turnout gear and avoids expensive replacement costs. Leading safety protocols, and strict quality control measures are taken.
Turnout Gear Washing care and repair staff are trained to make repairs and alternations to the following:

· Velcro enclosures
· Moisture barriers
· Reflective trim and lettering
· Burn holes, rips and tears
· Hardware buttons, snaps zippers, hooks
· Knee and shoulder pad reinforcements

Customization of Turnout Gear

It seems like turnout gear can always use another radio pocket, or perhaps the gear just does not fit correctly and alterations are needed. Even if you just want your name patched moved or changed, TurnoutGearWashing.com’s custom alteration shop can make these custom changes to your gear. Our staff is trained and aware of all code compliant accessories and can tailor any alterations to your specifications.

Turnout Gear Inspection

One of the most important aspects in maintenance of the integrity of turnout gear is inspections. These vary in intensity and need to be carried out at periodic intervals. The types of inspection are routine, advanced, and the complete liner inspection.  Staff employed by Turnout Gear Washing are trained and certified as an Independent Service Provider to conduct inspections:

Routine Inspection

The routine inspection that is carried out by each firefighter, as he/she is trained to do this, should take place on a regular basis. You should know when to check your turnout gear to protect yourself from any possible danger. Pay close attention to:

  • soiling and contamination
  • physical damage to the materials of the turnout gear
  • loss of integrity, in stitching, trim and seams

Advanced Inspection

Advanced inspection of turnout gear should take place every six months and be carried out by a trained fire department official or a certified third party such as Turnout Gear Washing. Certain procedures have to be followed in the advanced inspection process and properly documented:

  • Soiled turnout gear must be washed prior to inspection.
  • All findings of the inspection are to be documented.
  • All routine inspection procedures must be followed.

Tests on required turnout gear are:

  • A light evaluation test of liners
  • Evaluation for leakage
  • Assessment of physical and thermal damage
  • Testing for missing hardware
  • Moisture barrier integrity test
  • Seam integrity test
  • Material integrity test
  • Label integrity test
  • Reflectivity test
  • Closure system test

Complete Liner Inspection of Turnout Gear

A yearly complete liner inspection must be carried out if the turnout gear is three years or older. Turnout Gear Washing is certified for this inspection in which the turnout gear liner is separated from the main body of the garment in order to expose the moisture barrier and thermal liner. A specialized investigation takes place on both these elements and tests of the moisture and water penetration barrier are conducted. The moisture barrier is then evaluated to see if the garment is still viable for use. If the turnout gear is still good then it is sewn back together and returned to the owner.

Turnout Gear Tracking

Our online database tracks all turnout gear through every stage of the processes it undergoes. This allows the owner to follow the progress of the turnout gear and they are also provided with a full report once the gear has been returned to them. It works hand in hand with NFPA guidelines and includes information such as:

  • Name of bunker gear owner
  • Date of issue
  • Manufacturer
  • Manufacturer's serial number
  • Month and year of manufacture
  • Inspection Details
  • Wash Details
  • Repair Details
